Hearing Aid Styles

The following examples describe the various hearing aid styles:

Micro Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC): The smallest hearing instrument that is customized to fit deep inside a user’s ear. These hearing aids are appropriate for mild to moderate hearing loss.

In-the-Canal (ITC): These hearing instruments are custom-designed small enough to fit entirely in your ear canal. Their matched, skin-toned color and small size reduce their visibility. These hearing aids are appropriate for mild to moderately severe hearing loss.

In-the-Ear (ITE): These hearing aids are custom made to fit within the bowl of the ear. They are easy to insert and adjust, and are appropriate for mild to severe hearing loss.

Behind-the-Ear (BTE): these hearing aids fit snugly behind your ear and are attached to a custom ear piece molded to the shape of the user’s ear. They may be connected to external sound sources such as TVs or infrared listening systems. Appropriate for mild to very severe hearing loss.

Open-Ear-Behind-the-Ear (BTE): Open ear hearing instruments fit discretely behind the ear and have a sleek ergonomic design that utilizes ultra thin, virtually invisible tubing and comfortable, flexible tips designed to help reduce blockage in the ear canal. With no controls to adjust and no custom ear mold necessary they offer minimal ear canal obstruction and comfortable open fitting. These hearing aids are appropriate for mild to moderate hearing loss

Hearing Aid Technology

Most Advanced Digital
This category of hearing aid utilizes a digital conversion system for clearer speech processing. The computer chip in each hearing aid may contain up to 20 amplifiers, which allow the aid to me more accurately “fine-tuned” for a particular user. Advanced digital hearing aids are designed to adjust automatically to the type of environment the listener is in. Most of these models are available with directional microphones, feedback control, multiple listening programs and background noise reduction circuits.

Advanced Digital
This category of hearing aid utilizes a digital conversion system for clearer speech processing. The computer in this circuit may contain up to eight amplifiers for frequency adjustment. These aids may also have feedback control, directional microphones, multiple listening programs and background-noise reduction, but the user may have to change aid to desired settings.

Basic Digital
This category of hearing aid is similar in design to advanced digital products but utilizes only one amplifier to manage all sound processing. This aid can react to loud sounds by softening them, but will often soften speech as well.

Programmable
This category of hearing aid utilizes analog circuitry that can be digitally programmed. These hearing aids offer directional microphones and various memories that can be adjusted for loud and quiet environments.

Conventional
These hearing aids have analog circuitry that amplifies sounds. A manually adjustable volume control can increase sounds but will also increase background noise.

FM Wireless Technology
These external, remote sensory devices work with hearing aids to optimize listening when using a telephone, watching television, conducting a meeting, or conversing in a group situation.
